Week 11 at Thomas Edison Elementary

i do not have a picture for this blog because i have turned it in before being able to take a picture of it.

Last week was actually kind of nice and relaxed. The troublemaking kids were out for most of the week adn i felt like i was really able to connect better with the kids i was working with minus the distraction of takng kids to and from the office because of behavioral problems. There is one kid in particular who i am really growing attached to. i am certainly going to miss him the most of any one at that school

Week 9 at Thomas Edison Elementary

This week at service was a little different. the kids that were usually the most misbehaved were either not there most of the days or kicked out of the class quickly so it was actually a good week. I say it was a good week not because these kids are still getting into trouble but it was good because there were no distractions and i was able to work with the kids uninterrupted. i do see my work paying off with a lot of these kids. i love being able to congratulate a kid when he finally guesses a letter correctly for the first time and is able to remember that letter the next time as well

Week 8 at Thomas Edison Elementary

This week was just the same as the other weeks. I do not have any new stuff to say really. I am still just working with the kids and everything is running its course. I still must make the occasional visit to the principle's office with a misbehaving child but other than that everything is fine

Week 7 at Thomas Edison Elementary

Well again not much has changed. I am still dealing with two little kids that are on constant watch due to their attitude. I try everyday to get these kids in line but it is no use. These kids are out of control and  I am just trying to keep calm and not get too frustrated with these kids. I do not however believe that i am doing what I should be at this site, which is helping these kids learn. Instead i spend a lot of time chasing around kids just to bring them to the office and eventually i will find the child running around again and then have to restrain him yet again.

Week 6 at Thomas Edison Elemenary

This week was not unlike the others. I am well known by all the kids and am still having trouble with a few. They all scream goodbye to me as I leave the class which makes me get a little smile on my facebecause it lets me know they recognize me. The teacher has seemed more stressed than usual with these two crazy boys. I am still amazed that these boys act this way in kindergarten.

Week 5 Service at Thomas Edison Elementary

Week five of service as surprisingly harder than the previous week. The two troublemakers were especially problematic this week and distracted all the other kids in the class. I had to take them both down to the office because they were not doing anything good. One kid named Michael had to have his parents called to come pick him up. I was waiting for my carpools to come meet me when hhis parents rolled up in a beatdown old car blasting innapropriate music while an African American stepped out of the car smoking a cigarette went over grabbed Michael, a Mexican American, put him in the car and sped away. It was a sad sight to see. It really made me think about how grateful i am to have a family in good condition.

Week 4 service at Thomas Edison elementary.

Week four at my service site was basically the same. I now know a lot of the kids names and they all know mine. I am having some difficulty with a couple kids but they are being dealt with and watched on a daily basis. Seeing these kids act out like this make me feel grateful that I was able to be raised by my parents' full attention. I do believe this is why some of these kids act out in this way.

Week 2/3 Service at Thomas Edison Elementary

This will be my blog for both week 2 and week 3 because i only went to two days on week two and did not have anything to blog about. Now that i have been going to Thomas Edison Elementary for a couple weeks now i am starting to get used to the kids and the routine of everything, or at least i was getting used to the routine until it got changed on me. On monday i was told that i would still be with the same class but i would start off my service in a different classroom while the kids had Spanish time. There are some kids at the school who love learning and love knowing things while there are others that are completely against me in every way. While i have been there i have heard and seen some things i did not expect Kindergarteners to be capable of. i would have never thought about Kindergarteners getting expelled or suspended but i have seen both in my short time at the school. overall i think most of the kids are waring up to me and i hope it gets better from here .

P.s. my hours sheet shown below has all my hours but i have yet to get it completely signed because i lost it for a little while. i will be getting it signed tomorrow and will upload a new picture of the completed Week 2/3 hour sheet

Week 1 Sevice at Thomas Edison

At the conclusion of my first week of service at Thomas Edison Elementary school I took some time to reflect about how the week went. I met a lot of new people and had a great experience with the kids I work with. The first person I met when I arrived on campus was the principal of the school. He is a very intellegent man and taugh us a few ways to help kids remember things. He assigned me to a Kindergarten  class taught by a Mrs. Molitz. The kids in the class were very rowdy but she knew how to get them in line. Mrs. Molitz has been letting me teach kids the alphabet and numbers. I have met a lot of the kids through teaching them and am even starting to learn most of their names.

While doing my service I was pretty saddened by the fact that some of these kids didn't know any numbers or letters. To me this was really weird because my mom owns a preschool and her kids learn the alphabet and most numbers  before the age of five. So yes, it was a shock at first that these kids did not know what I was instructed to teach them but I am now dedicated to getting them to learn what they need to learn
